As the holiday season rolls around, Youngstown State University students find themselves balancing exams, empty wallets and the pressure to show appreciation to friends and family. Gift giving for college students is often a balancing act between creativity, budget and emotional need.

Sophomore Rachel Birch explained the stress of shopping on a limited budget—feeling discouraged when she wants to give, but struggles to afford it.

“I feel upset when I want to buy Christmas gifts, but don’t have a good budget. It’s defeating when you want to do something nice but you’re not able to,” Birch said.

Despite the stress, Birch said she still loves giving gifts, even the inexpensive ones.

“Even if it isn’t a lot, it’s still meaningful,” Birch said.

With finals around the corner, some students spend more time studying and forget their necessities. Gifts including lip balms, lotion, candles or a small face mask can help someone feel loved in stressful times.

Since gifts can also be measured in intention, Birch said something small and fun such as a mini game, a puzzle, candy, a hand-written note or an item chosen with care, brings the most value.

“You never want to give someone something they won’t enjoy. Even if it’s small, it shows you appreciate them,” Birch said.

For those in Youngstown who want to shop locally, several retailers are advertising holiday-themed gifts that may help students find affordable options.

Little Green Apple, a Christmas themed store located at The Shops at Boardman Park, features a wide variety of tree ornaments and small gifts for the season. The store also carries keepsakes such as holiday decor, greeting cards, candy and small accessories.

With the holiday season also comes holiday deals. Promotions include early-December discounts and discounts for students. Many items can be manageable for students with strict budgets.

Away from the Mahoning Valley, Kraynaks in Hermitage, Pennsylvania, is known for its displays and holiday collections. The store offers items including toys, crafts, decor, and other themed gifts. The store offers items varying in price, from small stocking stuffers to larger, more expensive pieces.

No matter the price of the gifts this year, it’s the thought that counts most.
