Youngstown State University joined colleges and universities across the country to celebrate Tutor Appreciation Week from Oct. 6-10, sponsored by the National Tutoring Association.
Throughout the week, YSU showed its appreciation to student tutors in the Writing Center, Math Achievement Center and Resch Academic Success Center.
Kevin Hartenstein, associate director of YSU Tutoring Services, along with other staff members, showcased their appreciation for the university’s tutors throughout the week.
Hartenstein said he appreciates the university’s tutors and the way they help other students.
“I tell them I appreciate them a lot, but I don’t know [if they know] the impact they actually have on campus. It’s kind of a thankless job, so that’s why weeks like this are important because we get to thank them and show them that what they’re doing is creating an impact for students,” Hartenstein said.
To start the week, tutors were provided with donuts and coffee from Dunkin’. The following day, tutors received a cookie tray as well as food and coffee vouchers for establishments in the area.
Faculty, staff and students were invited to show their gratitude by sending appreciation notes to YSU tutors to be shared with them throughout the week.
Kalyn Nuel, junior chemistry major, is one of the student tutors at YSU. Nuel said she became a tutor when Peter Norris, professor in Chemistry and Biological Sciences, reached out and asked her to be a tutor for organic chemistry.
To prepare for her sessions, Nuel has a meeting every Friday to cover what was discussed in lectures. Nuel said that tutoring helps her with schoolwork, as organic chemistry ties in with her chemistry major.
“[The most rewarding part of tutoring] is having that good feeling of knowing I helped [the students] understand their subject,” Nuel said.
Hartenstein said he’s worked with the tutors for five years and enjoys working with them, as it’s a way to help students at YSU succeed in the classroom.
“I love working with them, [I] love being their supervisor — a bunch of different personalities [and] individuals, so I just love doing what I can to help out,” Hartenstein said.
Students interested in becoming a tutor can reach out to Hartenstein or visit the YSU website for more information.
Anyone seeking tutoring services can visit the ASC, Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m to 5 p.m., and Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tutoring Services is located on the third floor of William F. Maag, Jr. Library in Room 306.
