Local band Mayzie is a group that exudes musical pride, a love for simply playing music. Since 2022, this group of friends crams together in a basement to play music for hours on end.
Mayzie first originated under the name Elektric. The idea started between drummer Colton Beil and lead guitarist Lee Thomas when they were in high school. Eventually, their friend Nathan Allison joined the band as a rhythm guitarist.
At Beils’ high school graduation party in 2023, bassist Kendall Krempasky and keyboardist Michael Harvey were welcomed to the group. Harvey said Beil was his childhood friend and bandmate for many years.
“I really wanted us to play [at his graduation party] … to some extent, it became the first ever Mayzie gig [by] accident. I had Kendall play bass for us … Michael did vocals for us originally,” Beil said.
With the five members, Mayzie began its journey into the musical world. In 2024, the band created its first EP, “Yea Dog,” which featured a total of five songs. Beil said the album was far from a polished piece.
“[It was] recorded very poorly with no knowledge of how to properly record any music. Funnily enough, every single song has a member missing off of it … it was complete chaos,” Beil said.
Biel described Mayzie’s earlier music as “aggressive” and “in your face,” similar to the band Incubus. Now, its music resembles a much quieter and more meticulous feel.
After some learning experiences, the band released its single “Battery Acid” later that year. Then, Beil wrote and recorded a single titled “Penies” for his girlfriend.
In early 2025, the band welcomed lead vocalist Trent Kliner. Kliner is not featured in any of Mayzie’s current releases, so the majority of Mayzie’s releases are instrumental-based songs.
Though there is not a specific genre to stick Mayzie under, most of its songs are similar to rock tunes, citing inspiration from the band Orgy and CKY.
When the band did change its name, Mayzie came from Beil’s childhood dog. With her recent passing, Mayzie served as an inspiration to the band to keep playing.
“I don’t want [listeners] to think that we’re going to become famous … I just want [them] to know who Mayzie is, that she existed at one point and to never forget her,” Beil said.
Mayzie will be playing a show on Halloween night in Coshocton. After that, the band doesn’t have a distinct plan for the future, but it plans to continue creating new music.
Mayzie’s music is available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music.
