The third annual Trick-or-Pete event will take place Oct. 21 at Youngstown State University’s Zidian Family Arena inside Beeghly Center.

The event takes place from 6-7:30 p.m., highlighting YSU’s men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Trick-or-Pete at Penguin Madness, an annual fan event hosted by the Youngstown State Athletic Department, invites attendees of all ages to dress in costume and celebrate Halloween with YSU athletes, students and campus community members. The free event also brings in local businesses to help with the night’s activities.

John Vargo, manager of corporate hospitality and group sales, said the event helps showcase who the athletes are as people — not just members of the team.

“They’re just not here to play athletics, they’re here for the total experience here, they’re here to be part of the community,” Vargo said. “Not only for our YSU students, but for our children. Because these children are someday going to be our YSU fans as well, so we want to make them feel comfortable.”

Two attendees will be randomly chosen to attempt a half-court basketball shot for a chance to win $500. There will also be autograph signings from the athletes, t-shirt giveaways and candy and snacks from vendors.

“We have some of the best giveaways here [at the event] in not only the Horizon League, but northeast Ohio,” Vargo said. “Come see us not only for Penguin Madness, but come see us during men’s and women’s basketball season here at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center.”

Chris Sumner, assistant athletics director, reiterated a similar point when speaking on the perks of coming to the event.

“The first 100 YSU students will receive a t-shirt courtesy of our partner, 21 WFMJ,” Sumner said.

Sumner said he hopes to see several students attend, adding to the game-day environment with the cheerleaders and pep band.

“We’re gonna do a couple different skill competitions, with men’s and women’s basketball teams, with half-court shots and 3-point contests and dunk contests. So, it should be a fun evening for all,” Sumner said.

During the event, the men’s and women’s rosters will be announced, as well as the coaching staff. The night will also feature a few words from Sumner and a player from each team speaking about the upcoming season.
