Penguins need to warm up

The extremely low temperatures on campus make for an environment that is sometimes too cold for a penguin.

A variety of students at Youngstown State University were asked,”What is your favorite place to escape the cold weather and warm up on campus?”

The answers differed among students, though Kilcawley Center seemed to be a fan favorite.

Kilcawley, located in the center of campus, is home to an array of student amenities. Some of these include the Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center, student dining areas as well as academic resource centers.

Samantha Cox, freshman dual major in education and musical theatre, said she prefers to head to the Rec Center, rather than buildings that house her major.

“My favorite place to warm up on campus is the Rec Center, but specifically the upstairs track,” Cox said.

Ty Holland and Hayden Landfair, junior mechanical engineering students, said their favorite place to escape the cold is also the Rec. Both shared this opinion as they were heading there to complete an afternoon workout.

Winters on campus can be very difficult to navigate, but students don’t seem to mind spending a little extra time indoors when there is a variety of facilities to choose from.

Ellie Maurice, senior marketing major, spends a lot of time on campus as a commuter. A majority of her time is spent in Tod Hall as a social media intern.

“My favorite place to warm up on campus might actually be the room I am in right now, which is the lobby of Tod Hall,” Maurice said.

The average temperature in Youngstown during the month of January was 28.3 degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore, finding a warm and cozy study spot is essential in these conditions.

Students tend to spend time in buildings that correlate with their major and house the courses they’re taking. This allows them to avoid the cold as much as possible.

Katie Buttar, junior marketing major, enjoys spending time in Williamson Hall.

“My favorite place to warm up on campus is inside the [Michael and Suellen Weir Atrium],” Buttar said.

Other locations students mentioned include the Cushwa Café, Beeghly Hall study rooms and Dunkin’ Donuts within Kilcawley.

As soon as spring arrives, The Jambar will ask students their favorite outdoor study spots.
