The Youngstown State University Penguins men’s basketball team had a big win against Westminster, 108-57. The Penguins had a convincing win and looked good during the game.
Head coach Jerry Slocum said that he felt the other day his team started badly and finished poorly, but he thought that they played excellent from the begging to the end in Saturday’s game.
With the size advantage, YSU had ten blocks in the first half alone. Five YSU players scored in double digits. Sophomore Bobby Hain had a game high with 16 points and senior Kendrick Perry had 13 points, five rebounds and six assists.
YSU had a lot of help from their reserves in the blowout win, with the bench scoring 54 points. Freshman Marcus Keene came off the bench, scoring 15 points and six assists.
Slocum said that these types of games are great for developing younger players.
“That’s what you want out of these kind of games, you want to keep you edge and execute well, but you want to throw those young guys in there and let them see,” said Slocum.
YSU started to pour on the points in the beginning of the game and never looked back, scoring 37 in the first nine minutes of the game, while holding the Titans to just seven.

Coach Slocum said he wanted the team to really share the ball in this game and get shots. YSU finished the game with 23 assists and 12 turnovers.
“We shared the ball and we played very unselfish,” said Slocum. “I told our guys I would be very disappointed if we didn’t have over 20 assist, that’s an indication of how you played selfishly.”
The Penguins also set a school record for rebounds. YSU had 66 rebounds topping the schools previous high of 64 against Tennessee Technological University in 1987.
“I thought we showed some aggressiveness on the glass today in terms of going to get it,” Slocum said.
YSU held the Titans to 30.8% from the field, 35.7% from three-point range and forced 14 turnovers.
“I think were starting to get it a little bit better,” Slocum said.
The Penguins take on Kent State University on the road at 7 p.m. on Nov. 27.
