Online Exclusive: A Local Singer and YSU Communications Professor

By Marah Morrison

Cary Wecht is a professor of communication and director of faculty professional development at Youngstown State University. Not only is she a faculty member at YSU, she is the lead singer and party director of the local band Cary Lynn and the Rebellion.

Wecht is a Youngstown native who was inspired by her colleagues to enter the local music scene. She covers everything from Norah Jones to Guns & Roses, but specializes in country music. A Q&A was conducted with Wecht to cover more information about the local band.

Q: What started Cary Lynn and the Rebellion?

A: I found the guys on Craigslist; they were looking for a female lead singer. They aren’t affiliated with YSU.

Bryan Mosora – Guitar, Vocals

Jack Chamberlin – Bass Guitar, Vocals

Chris Hartzell – Drums, Percussion, and Producer

Joe Percun – Guitar and Keyboard, Vocals

Q: When do you write and how do you write your songs?

A: So far, we’ve been a cover band, but we’re talking about adding some original songs. Bryan has been working on a couple.

Q: Do you have any country music artists or bands that inspired you to do this?

A: None in particular. I love all sorts of music, and was previously a member of an acoustic duo that covered country, rock and pop stuff. This was a fun change. We do cover a good deal of Miranda Lambert songs; I admire her talent.

Q: At times, do you feel like you’re living double lives? Life as a faculty member at YSU and life as musician/singer?

A: That’s funny; I suppose so! I definitely let my hair down with the band.

Q: What do you like the most about being a part of Cary Lynn and the Rebellion?

A: The experience is so joyful. The guys are easy going and entertaining, and the songs are fun and beautiful.

Q: Do you have any tips and advice to anyone who wants to consider doing something like this?

A: Just do it, and do it with abandon.

Q: Does being a part of this band get stressful at times? Does it ever get in the way of YSU tasks?

A: All of us have a little nervous energy before performing, but once we get going, that subsides.

The band is a separate component of my life. We practice and play on weekends, so there’s no interference with work.

Q: Where does Cary Lynn and the Rebellion perform at in most cases?

A: We’re assembling our schedule for the year. Two definite places are Los Gallos in Boardman and the Feed & Sing in Salem.

Cary Lynn and the Rebellion’s set list includes Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town, Kenny Chesney, Johnny Cash, Chris Stapleton, the Brothers Osborne, The Band Perry, Trick Pony, Maren Morris, Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum and more.
