The intersection at Rayen and Fifth avenues closed around 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday after a black Dodge Avenger and silver Chevrolet Impala collided.
The impact totaled both cars and caused the Impala to wrap around a telephone pole.
The roads were clear but wet at the time of the accident.
The Youngstown State University Police Department was the first to respond, because the accident occurred adjacent to campus police headquarters. Youngstown and Austintown fire and police departments also assisted.
Officials on scene said the person at fault is yet to be determined.
Three unidentified women were involved in the incident — one in the Avenger and two in the Impala.
A parking permit was seen in the Avenger; however, officials were unable to confirm whether students were involved in the accident.
The driver of the Avenger was shaken but for the most part uninjured.
The two females in the Impala were taken from the scene via ambulance to an undisclosed hospital.
YSUPD Sgt. Kris Russell said she was more concerned with getting the women into the ambulance than anything else.
Ron Russo, president of Youngstown Fire and Safety Inc., had spoken with police and emergency personnel at the scene. He said as far as he knows, everyone is alive.
A MyYSU personal announcement was emailed at 4:13 p.m. notifying students, faculty and staff of the closed intersection. The intersection has since been reopened.
