Look into Goode’s ‘Things I’ve Said Before’

Singer-songwriter Remi Goode will release her debut album “Things I’ve Said Before” on Sept. 26. The record combines hints of folk, jazz and rock genres into one project.

The album has a total of nine songs, beginning with “Don’t Drive Me Home” and concluding with “Overseas.”

Goode is a classically trained musician. Her musical background began with guitar lessons at 7 years old in her hometown of Tucson, Arizona. At that time, Goode said she learned that she also had a passion for singing.

“I had a really good teacher … he was really open to it when he found out I liked to sing,” Goode said.

Goode said the record was long awaited as she began writing many of the songs five years ago.

“I’ve already been doing this for so long, how is this my debut? That’s why I wanted to call it ‘Things I’ve Said Before’ as an inside joke to that,” Goode said.

The Folk genre is a major part of Goode’s work. Several of her influences stemmed from the music her dad would play, including Suzanne Vega, Kathleen Edwards and Sarah Harmer — all displaying folk influence. Their inspirations helped develop her musical style.

Listeners interested in breaking away from folk music can look forward to Goode’s “Punchline” and “Return to Sender.” For jazz listeners, “Don’t Drive Me Home” and “Short Circuit” have a soulful and smooth feeling that jazz encapsulates.

Goode plays alongside her partner and lead guitarist Gabe Lehrer in a five-piece band. The process of creating the album was described by Goode as two phrases. She said the first five tracks were created in an in-house recording studio, where the songs were layered.

The final four tracks were produced at Goode’s alma mater, Arizona State University. Goode said recording the tracks at ASU gave them a different type of vibe .

“The recordings themselves are more raw and live-feeling because we were playing all together in a room. We got the best of both worlds in that sense,” Goode said.

Once the songs are released, Goode and her band will hit the road Oct. 6 to play her first show in Lexington, Kentucky. Afterwards, the band will perform Nov. 11 at South Side Flats in Pittsburgh.

The “Things I’ve Said Before” tour will feature many new up-and-coming artists such as Rachel McIntyre Smith, Madeleine Kelson, Brittany Ann Traunbaugh and the band Cloudbelly.

Most of the band and Goode’s time is focused on getting the album out. Goode shared the group’s future plans.

“I definitely want to get back into the writing phase and work on a full-length record. We also do have plans to put out a deluxe version of this album in the spring,” Goode said.
