Before Elvis: The African American Musicians Who Made the King by Preston Lauterbach |

In his new book, Lauterbach sheds light on the Black musicians who inspired Elvis Presley’s musical style and stage presence, while also showing how Presley’s covers helped integrate radio playlists and progress the Civil Rights Movement. While Elvis himself worked to be respectful and open about his musical inspirations, his label and manager did not officially give credit or proper compensation to the original performers. Lauterbach revisits the early rock ‘n’ roll era to bring the lives of several African American musicians to light.
