The Youngstown State University women’s tennis team picked up a 5-2 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on April 5 at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
In doubles, YSU won at No. 2 and No. 3 to clinch the point. At No. 3, freshman Lydia Foster and sophomore Lorena Cedeno picked up a 6-1 win. After Milwaukee won No. 1 doubles, senior Lili Minich and junior Line Greyling won the final four points to pick up a 6-3 win at No. 3.
In singles, YSU won in straight sets. At No. 1, senior Julia Marko picked up two straight sets. At No. 2, Minich won by scores of 6-4 and 6-2. At No. 3, sophomore Yeseniia Ovcharova won her match 6-4 and 6-0 and at No. 5, Loreno Cedeno cruised to a 6-3 and 6-0 victory.
The team also picked up a 7-0 win against Chicago State University on April 6 at home.
YSU earned a walkover at No. 3 doubles and won by default at No. 2. At No. 1, Marko and senior Ghada Dirninger won 6-1.
In singles, the only two full matches came at No. 1 and No. 2. At No. 1, Marko won 6-2 and 6-0, while at No. 2, Minich won in straight sets.
Marko now has 79 career singles victories, while Minich has 58 wins. Marko moves into sole possession of second place in school history for career singles victories.
With the win, the Penguins improve to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the Horizon League.
Youngstown State returns to action on the road April 12-13 against Indiana University Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky University.
