Five Colorful Years

Participants of the 5K Color Run can expect a twist this year. Since it’s the fifth anniversary of the Color Run, they are engaging in the new Tropicolor World Tour, where runners will pass through the shade of palm trees, arches and island style music as they are covered in colors.

The Color Run Tropicolor World Tour will be held at the Covelli Center in Youngstown on June 11 at 8 a.m. After the race, there will be a festival featuring music, dancing and explosions of color.

Proceeds from this event will benefit Akron Children’s Hospital of Mahoning Valley.

Former participant Amy Flick said she enjoyed her experience and the positive atmosphere at the Color Run last year. She said it’s seen as more of a community event than a competition.

“It’s really fun and positive. It’s not geared towards being serious,” she said.

Kelsey Rupert, director of marketing and sales at Covelli Centre and Packard Music Hall, explained that this race is more about the experience than running a great time.

“It’s a great bonding experience, which is the forefront of what the college experience should be,” Rupert said. “It isn’t just a run. It is the happiest run on earth.”

The Color Run is one of two major running events held in Youngstown. The other is Panerathon. Hosting events like the Panerathon helps when it comes to planning the Color Run, because there’s already a running course mapped out.

Rupert explained the event helps businesses by bringing people downtown and creating a positive, community environment. People who haven’t visited the downtown area since it’s restructuring will be exposed to the new businesses.
