Women’s tennis takes gamble in Vegas

The Youngstown State University women’s tennis team traveled to Las Vegas on Jan. 31, as it faced off against Oral Roberts University at the Feritta Tennis Complex.

The Penguins marked their first program win against the Golden Eagles 5-2. 

During singles, Youngstown State won four matches in straight sets, while YSU won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. 

At No. 1, senior Julia Marko and senior Ghada Dirninger won with a 6-2 score, while at No. 3 junior Line Greyling and sophomore Yeseniia Ovcharova won 6-4.

Senior Lili Minich, at No. 2, lost her first set, but won the next two matches. 

YSU returned to the Feritta Tennis Complex on Saturday, Feb. 1 and took on Weber State University. The women’s tennis team swept in singles beating Weber State 6-1.

After the ’Guins dropped the doubles point, they swept all six of their singles matches, as they won in three-straight sets.

Winning in two sets were Marko, Minich and Ovcharova, while Dubova and sophomore Lorena Cedeno recorded wins over three sets. 

Marko had two of the six wins, as Minich won two matches by a final of 6-3. Youngstown State continued its successful match, with a win by Dirninger. 

The women’s tennis team continued its trip in Vegas on Feb. 2 against the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The match lasted over three hours, but the Penguins came up short 5-2.

UNLV improved to 3-0 after a weekend of matches against YSU, while Youngstown State dropped to 3-2 overall.

The Penguins trailed by two wins as Marko earned straight wins at No. 1 singles, as Greyling fell short over three sets.

Dirninger came back from a 5-1 start in the match, tied up the score and walked away the winner of a tiebreaker against UNLV 6-5.

Marko also secured her first set of the day 7-6, before she fell in the second set. In the tiebreaker, she led 5-3 before she lost her third by a score of 6-3.

Youngstown State returns to action at home against the University at Buffalo on Feb. 7 at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center. First serve is at 3 p.m.
