Soccer earns crucial points in HL stretch

Between a draw against Cleveland State University on Sept. 25 and a win over the University of Detroit Mercy on Sept. 28, the Youngstown State University women’s soccer team secured four key Horizon League points.

The ’Guins stayed competitive against the Vikings at Krenzler Field in Cleveland for a 1-1 draw, and secured a 4-2 victory against Detroit Mercy at Farmers National Bank Field.

Freshman Kamryn Rosa filled up the stat sheet as she scored in both matches. Against Cleveland State, Rosa delivered the equalizer in the 78th minute with a strike from outside the box to secure the draw against the Vikings.

Back home at Farmer’s National Bank Field, Rosa opened the scoring in the 16th minute before senior Taylor Berry doubled the scoring effort. Berry scored twice — once on a penalty kick and again on the eventual game-winner. Berry became the first Penguin with a multi-goal game since 2024.

For Berry, it marked her first goal of the season and first two-goal performance since Oct. 30, 2022.

Sophomore Sara Felder added an insurance goal, while junior Camille Bultel tallied two assists and freshman Baylee Williams chipped in another goal for the win over Detroit Mercy.

The two results moved the ’Guins to 3-8-1 overall on the season and 2-1-1 in Horizon League play.

Rosa now has four goals this season — the most by a Youngstown State freshman since 2019. Berry’s two-goal effort also moved her into the program’s all-time top-10 goal scorer, with 11 career goals and 31 career points.

The Penguins return to action Oct. 4 at Wright State University. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Alumni Field at the Rinzler Student Sports Complex in Dayton.
