Penguins draw line between Raiders

Fresh off a conference victory against the University of Detroit Mercy, the Youngstown State University women’s soccer team secured a 1-1 draw against Wright State University on Oct. 4.  

The Penguins started their three-game road trip with a stop in Dayton against the Raiders. In the match, sophomore Sara Felder scored for the fourth time this season and is now tied for second in points with nine, alongside freshman Kamryn Rosa. 

Felder gave the Penguins a 1-nil lead with a goal at the 13:12 mark of the contest. The team held the advantage until Wright State senior Mariella Hartmann found the back of the net at the 59:16 mark to tie the game. 

In total, the Penguins recorded 12 shots as sophomore Kate Makkas led the team with three. In the net, redshirt sophomore Maya Naimoli recorded four saves. 

The draw against the Raiders moves the Penguins to 3-8-2 overall and 2-1-2 in league play. 

With a point against Wright State, Youngstown State now sits in fourth place in the Horizon League standings. 

At the top of the league standings is the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee at 5-0. At the No. 2 spot is Northern Kentucky University, followed by Wright State at No. 3. 

Three conference teams have yet to win a Horizon League game at the time of publication  — Detroit Mercy, Purdue University Fort Wayne and Cleveland State University. 

Youngstown State is still in search of its first road win of the season. The Penguins will stay on the road with a matchup against Purdue Fort Wayne at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Hefner Soccer Complex in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
