The Youngstown State University football team made a statement against St. Francis University. The Red Flashes (1-2) couldn’t come up with an answer to stop the Penguins running game this afternoon.
YSU (2-1) was able to defeat Red Flashes 48-3.
YSU running back Jody Webb was able to put the first scoring touchdown the board — running for 22 yards to put the Penguins up 10- 0. Webb had a big game for the Penguins, running for 93 yards and two touchdowns. In the first half the Penguins had a total of 304 yards total offence, with 177 yards rushing.
Shane Kuhn who usually lines up at tight end, was put at full back for this game and scored two goal line touchdowns.
“I expected maybe one or two third and shorts, but I mean it was working so we just going back to it,” tight end Shane Kuhn said. “It was a really good for our team’s confidence, it was a good teams win all away around on offense, defense, and special teams.”
Penguins dominated to start the game, giving YSU a 38-0 lead over the Red Flashes at halftime. St. Francis quarterback Zack Drayer was only able to complete 1-10 passes for 10 yards. Red Flashes’ running back Khairi Dickson, one of the top running backs in the Football Championship Subdivision was only held to five yards throughout the whole half.
“Obviously I was happy about the win, I thought we did a lot of good things and played a lot cleaner. I think we’re a better football team after this win, we practiced better therefore the result was better,” YSU head coach Bo Pelini said.
With YSU defensive end Derek Rivers being placed at linebacker, the Penguins were able to bring a new look to the field.
“We were a lot cleaner, we put some new personals in, we played Derek Rivers at linebacker today — I thought he handled it well, I think we can build on that,” Pelini said. “It’s get our best 11 on the field at one time, especially when they’re big it gets Avery [Moss], Derek [Rivers], and Terrell [Williams] all on the field at the same time.”
Throughout the second half YSU continued to pile on the points, increasing the lead to 48-0
YSU backup quarterback Ricky Davis was able to put together an 8-play, 56-yard drive
