The Penguin Pantry runs on donations and support from various groups on campus. One organization that has stepped up this semester is Lambda Pi Eta, an honors communication society at Youngstown State University.
According to ysu.edu, the Penguin Pantry has provided frozen and fresh food, hygiene products and cleaning supplies since its inception in 2016.
The pantry is located on the third floor of DeBartolo Hall along with the Career Closet, which provides professional attire for students in need. Both are run by the Office of the Dean of Students.
Senior Abigail Gutowski, Lambda Pi Eta president, said the drive allows members to practice their communication skills by broadcasting the pantry’s needs.
“We try to do a drive every semester, depending on what [the Penguin Pantry] are in need of,” Gutowski said. “We keep in touch with them and see if they are in need of cleaning things, or if they’re doing a winter clothes drive, and that way we can get more for [those items], rather than just food.”
Gutowski said the drive’s goal this semester was to make sure the pantry had all of its needs covered before going into the summer semester.
“Making sure that we’re staying up to date with the Penguin Pantry to make sure that we’re getting everything that they need and not getting things that they already have too much of,” Gutowski said.
The pantry is always accepting donations. They also have volunteers that work the offices.
“We just want to help and make sure that the Penguin Pantry stays stocked up because they really do amazing things and they help out so much,” Gutowski said.
Students interested in donating or volunteering with the Penguin Pantry can email the Office of the Dean of Students at dos@ysu.edu for more information.
