U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Officer Jonathan Ross shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good on Jan. 7 while she was observing agents in Minneapolis.
Regarding the incident, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, claiming that the ICE officers shot in self defense.
“The woman driving the car was very disorderly, obstructing and resisting, who then violently, willfully and viciously ran over the ICE Officer, who seems to have shot her in self-defense,” Trump stated.
A video of the shooting is circulating online that tells a different story. In the video, three masked ICE agents approached the victim’s vehicle. The vehicle was an appropriate distance away from the agents before one agent placed himself in front of the vehicle.
Good was a legal observer, not obstructing the harassment of her neighbors by federal agents. Although Good was interacting with agents by voicing her disapproval of the presence of federal officers, she was simply demonstrating her First Amendment right to free speech.
Feeling threatened, she turned her wheel away from the officers and attempted to drive away before an agent drew his weapon and fired three shots into the vehicle. No ICE agents were harmed.
Jacob Frey, mayor of Minneapolis, responded to the incident on the same day, visibly angry and demanding ICE leave the city.
“To ICE, get the f—- out of Minneapolis. We do not want you here. Your stated reason for being in this city is to create some kind of safety and you’re doing exactly the opposite,” Frey said.
This is not the only act of violence demonstrated by ICE agents on U.S. citizens, but a blatant example of abuse of power, which didn’t result in the arrest of an agent. This abhorrent act of violence highlights the failures of immigration enforcement since raids began.
This is not uncommon though, according to The Guardian, 32 people died in ICE custody throughout 2025. The same year, ICE received around $70 billion from taxpayers.
According to CBS News, while being held in ICE custody, detainees reported fecal flooding and maggots in food. These are inhumane, borderline torturous conditions. Failures are seen throughout the nation, resulting in the careless deaths of many.
As of September 2025, 72% of detainees held no criminal conviction. To be specific, this is 42,755 out of 59,762 people, according to Econofact. Not only is this a record number of arrests, but it is a direct violation of the values the U.S. built itself on over 200 years ago.
Residing in the U.S., whether overstaying a visa or entering without inspection, is a civil violation, not a criminal one.
How long will this continue, and how much longer will we allow a fascist regime to assault, kidnap and kill innocent people? Everyone who comes in contact with an ICE agent is under threat, regardless of immigration status. Those who agree with these incidents are part of the problem that is sweeping the nation.
